Differences between Investing vs Trading

Palantir Technologies is an American software that deals in big data and analytics. From its headquarters in Denver, Colorado, it spearheads three major projects: Palantir Gotham, Palantir Apollo, and Palantir Foundry.

Gotham focuses on counterterrorism and provides analytics and resources to US defence agencies. Apollo is a defence operating system, and Foundry supplies data analytics to major corporations, including Morgan Stanley, Merck, and Airbus.

Through its three verticals, Palantir Technologies generated $1.5 billion in revenue in 2021. What’s more, as well as providing services for government agencies and major corporations, it’s headed by high-profile tech entrepreneurs and investors such as Peter Thiel.

Palantir Technologies was founded in 2003 and, in 2020, it held its Initial Public Offering (IPO). Ahead of the PLTR share listing, the company was valued at $15.8 billion. That was lower than its estimated value when raised private funding in 2015. However, the PLTR share price history shows a certain level of consistency.

PLTR shares were listed on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2020. The initial value was $10 and, by January 2021, the PLTR share price had peaked at $35. It subsequently fell throughout 2021 before evening out close to the original PLTR share price of $10 in 2022.

Investing is the act of buying an underlying asset, such as Palantir Technologies shares. Buying the asset means you own it and, therefore, have a stake in its fortunes. Specifically, as the share price rises, so does the value of your holding. When it falls, the value of your holding falls.

When you trade the PLTR.US share price, you’re speculating on price movements. You don’t own any stock, which means you don’t have a direct interest in the company’s value. This allows you to go long (profit from price increases) or short (profit from price decreases). In essence, you’ve got more flexibility when you trade PLTR shares.
