How did Vitalik Buterin create Ethereum?

  1. The idea: In 2013, Vitalik Buterin, a young Russian-Canadian programmer, came up with the idea for Ethereum. He wanted to create a new kind of blockchain platform that went beyond just digital money. His goal was to build a system that would let developers create their smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps).
  2. The whitepaper: Vitalik wrote a whitepaper titled “A Next-Generation Smart Contract and Decentralized Application Platform.” This document explained his vision for Ethereum and how it would work. He proposed a platform where developers could write code that runs automatically when certain conditions are met, without needing a middleman.
  3. The funding: To make his vision a reality, Vitalik and his team organized an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in July 2014. During the ICO, they sold Ethereum tokens to investors to raise money for development. They successfully raised 31,500 BTC (Bitcoin), which was worth around $18 million at the time.
  4. The launch: With the funds raised, Vitalik and his team worked hard to build Ethereum. They officially launched the Ethereum mainnet on July 30, 2015. This was the start of the Ethereum blockchain, where people could begin using the platform to create and run smart contracts and dApps.
  5. The growth: Since its launch, Ethereum has become one of the most popular blockchain platforms. It is used for a wide range of applications beyond digital money, including Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). As of July 5th, 2024, Ethereum's market cap is around $345 billion.
  6. Vitalik’s Influence: Vitalik Buterin is now a leading figure in the cryptocurrency world. He has been recognized with awards like the World Technology Award for Information Technology in 2014 and has been named one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time Magazine.
